Why We Invented Money
Money replaced barter because it works even when people want different things.
The idea
Before money, people used barter: you traded a thing you had for a thing you wanted. Barter only works when the other person happens to want exactly what you are offering, which does not happen very often. Money fixed that, because almost everyone accepts money, and it is easy to carry, count, and save for later. Over time money went from useful objects to metal coins to paper to numbers on a screen 🪙
