This policy covers the Vine preview you are using: its lessons, practice portfolio and My money pages. It says what this version of Vine keeps, where it goes, and how to have it deleted. The Cookie Policy covers what is stored in your browser in more detail.

1. On your device

In short

Your profile, progress, practice portfolio and My money list are kept in this browser. While you're signed in, anyone using this browser can see them.

The full text

  • Your profile and progress: your Vine name (two picture words, or, for a child under 13, the first name they typed and their parent approved), username, avatar, age range, daily goal, lessons, XP, seeds and league.
  • Your practice portfolio and My money list.
  • Settings such as language, theme and sound, and recently fetched stock prices.

While you are signed in, your profile is stored as readable text in this browser, so anyone using this browser can see it. When you sign out, your account’s copy is locked with a key protected by your password, or, if you sign in with Google, by a key that only your own Google sign-in can get from Vine’s server.

2. On Vine’s servers

In short

Vine's servers get your sign-in, your opening answers and your progress, kept unencrypted so it reaches a new device, plus a parent's email for a child under 13.

The full text

  • Sign-in: your email address and password go to Firebase Authentication, a Google service that runs Vine’s sign-in. If you choose Continue with Google (13 and over only), Google tells Vine your email address; Vine never reads or keeps your Google name or photo.
  • Your opening answers: age range, level and daily goal.
  • Your progress: lessons finished, XP, seeds, league, streak, daily goal, which ideas come back for review, and your practice portfolio. We keep these on our server, not encrypted, so that they reach you when you sign in on a new device: a copy locked with a key only your device has could not. It holds no names and nothing you typed, and never your My money list. For a child under 13, nothing is kept until a parent has said yes.
  • A progress summary: lessons and sections finished, the lesson you are on, minutes used each day, your language and your Vine name if it is two picture words (a typed first name is never sent). Every account with a sign-in sends this while Vine is open, whether or not a parent is connected.
  • For accounts 13 and over: which version of these documents you accepted, and when.
  • For children under 13: the parent’s email address, the first name the child typed for the parent to approve, and whether the parent said yes (section 3).
  • If you sign in with Google: one random key, used only to lock your account’s copy on your device when you sign out (a Google account has no password to do that). It is given only to your own Google sign-in.

Our server functions see the IP address a request comes from. Where they use it to limit how many requests one device can make, they store only a scrambled form of it (a keyed hash).

3. Children under 13

In short

A child under 13 gives a parent's email; the parent has to tap yes. The parent sees progress and minutes, never the portfolio or My money.

The full text

Before a child under 13 can use Vine, we ask the child for their first name and a parent’s email address. We keep the name with the request only, so the parent can see it; nothing else stores it before the parent says yes. We create an anonymous sign-in with no name or email, and email the parent a link. Opening the link does not give permission; the parent has to tap yes, and can keep, change or clear the child’s name first. A cleared name means the child picks a name from pictures instead. The link stops working after 14 days. Once the parent says yes, the child makes a sign-in with their own email address and a password. Until then, the app stays closed.

A connected parent can see the child’s Vine name if it is two picture words, lessons finished, the lesson they are on, when they last used Vine, minutes used each day for the last 14 days, and the limits the parent set. The parent never sees the child’s answers, practice portfolio or My money list. Limits are enforced on the child’s device, and someone with technical knowledge can get around them.

If a parent never says yes, the request, including the parent’s email address and the child’s typed name, is deleted automatically 14 days after it was made. If the parent says yes but the child never finishes signing up, the typed name is cleared 30 days after the yes. The parent’s email address also stays in the child’s browser until the child makes a sign-in or taps Start over. A parent can withdraw permission by writing to vineteam@vineteach.com.

4. Other companies involved

In short

Google, Supabase, Resend and Cloudflare handle parts of Vine, and Google Workspace hosts the inbox a parent writes to. The price providers get only stock symbols.

The full text

  • Google (Firebase Authentication) runs sign-in, including the anonymous sign-in for children under 13.
  • Supabase runs Vine’s server functions and database.
  • Resend sends the email to a parent.
  • Google Workspace hosts our parent-support email inbox. It receives and stores emails and attachments you send us, including signed consent forms, your name and email address, the account request reference, and any information about your child included in your message. We use this correspondence to verify and record parental permission, answer questions, and handle requests to review information, withdraw permission or delete information. Resend separately delivers our outgoing service emails.
  • Cloudflare runs a small program of ours that fetches stock prices and charts, so our data-provider keys never end up in your browser. Cloudflare receives your device’s IP address, its browser details and which stock symbols were looked up, never a name, an email or a Vine account. Our program keeps the IP address for a minute or two, only to limit how many requests one device can make. It also keeps copies of the answers, with the symbols but without the IP address, for up to a week.
  • Our price providers supply the prices. They receive only stock symbols, from our program, never anything about you.

Vine shows no ads and runs no analytics or tracking scripts.

5. Deleting

In short

Delete profile in Settings asks our servers to delete your account's data and sign-in. A few things stay; write to us for anything else.

The full text

In Settings, Delete profile asks our servers to delete your account’s data and your sign-in, then removes your profile from this browser. A few things stay: a record that a deleted account existed, so nothing can be written to it again; and, in this browser, your settings, recently fetched prices and any parent email address from an unfinished request. On My money, Delete everything on this page removes the list from this device. If a deletion doesn’t finish, or you want something else deleted, write to vineteam@vineteach.com.
