# Growth calculator

Move the sliders to see how money put away could grow over time. No sign-in, and nothing you enter leaves this page.

## The calculator

Starting amount: $100

Added each month: $25

Years: 10

Growth a year: 7%

7% is roughly the long-run average yearly return of the US stock market after inflation, so the figures are in today's money: what they would buy now. 0% shows no growth at all; above 7% is a guess.

You'd put in

**$3,100**

Could grow to about

**$4,473**

in today's money

Of that, about $1,373 would be growth.

This is a projection, not a promise. Real markets fall, sometimes for years. The average line is smooth; a real result never is.

| Year | Average path (a projection) | Illustration: same average, bumpy years | What you put in |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 1 | $416 | $438 (that year +16.7%) | $400 |
| 2 | $755 | $699 (that year −6.9%) | $700 |
| 3 | $1,117 | $1,197 (that year +23.8%) | $1,000 |
| 4 | $1,505 | $1,610 (that year +8.5%) | $1,300 |
| 5 | $1,920 | $1,647 (that year −15%) | $1,600 |
| 6 | $2,364 | $2,189 (that year +13.6%) | $1,900 |
| 7 | $2,839 | $2,615 (that year +5.4%) | $2,200 |
| 8 | $3,347 | $3,486 (that year +20.8%) | $2,500 |
| 9 | $3,891 | $3,723 (that year −1.7%) | $2,800 |
| 10 | $4,473 | $4,469 (that year +11.6%) | $3,100 |

- What you put in
- Average path (a projection)

The bumpy line is an illustration, not real market data, with the same average: 3 of its 10 years go down.

## How the numbers work

- The yearly rate is after inflation, so every figure is in today's money: what it would buy now, not a bigger-looking future number.
- Figures are rounded down to the whole dollar and say "about". A projection is never rounded up.
- Growth is added every month at the rate that makes a full year come to the yearly rate exactly (not the yearly rate split into twelve, which overstates it).
- The bumpy line is an illustration with the same average. Real markets go down in some years, and the order of good and bad years changes where you end up.
- Nothing here is saved or sent anywhere.
